The Washington State Beef Commission announced today, following its regular board meeting, that a former office manager may have misused just over $20,000 on a Beef Commission credit card for personal benefit. The Beef Commission immediately reported the alleged fraud to the State Auditor and the State Ethics Board for investigation. The case was also reported to the Renton Police Department.
“We are confident that the financial checks and balances that we have in place worked to limit the impact of this situation,” said Liz Para, chair of the Washington State Beef Commission, a beef producer from Othello, WA. “Our multi-layered system of control and oversight helped us discover the issue within a short time frame and allowed us to act swiftly.”
The Beef Commission board and staff will continue to work with the State Auditors Office to identify any areas where our administrative oversight can be improved. The board and staff reaffirm their commitment to integrity and careful stewardship of beef producers’ Beef Checkoff investment. Since this is an ongoing investigation, our ability to provide further information is limited at this time.
